Septic Tank Cleaning – A Quick 10 Step Guide

Septic tank cleaning

Before getting started with septic tank cleaning, do you know what a septic tank is and how it works? If yes, that’s great. But in case you are not much familiar with a septic tank, we have created a quick overview of a septic tank and its working procedure.

septic tank cleaning

Septic Tank:

A septic tank is a large container that is placed under the ground. It is used for the purpose of treating wastewater that flows out of the house. It is typically made up of fiberglass, plastic, or concrete. Septic tank is used where sewerage or wastewater management is not available. Most commonly used at onsite areas.

How does a septic tank work?

The Septic tank separates the sewage and wastewater into different chambers. After a short period of time, sludge and scum layers build up within the tank.

It usually consists of two compartments. Higher density solids settle down at the bottom and the liquid waste passes to the other compartment. Solids get decomposed by anaerobic digestion and as a result, produce sludge. This sludge reduces the active volume of the septic tank and therefore there is a need to clean out the tank.

It’s important that the septic tank is cleaned on a regular basis in order to get rid of the sludge and scum buildup. Without cleaning the tank, the system will become inefficient. It will not effectively treat the wastewater that flows through it.

Septic tank cleaning:

We have got enough introduction of septic tank ant its working procedure. Now let us talk about septic tank cleaning. Cleaning a septic tank is a regular process that’s done after every two or three years. However, a regular inspection is highly recommended in order to keep your tank working efficiently. Inspection can be done by checking the scum and sludge layers of the tank. If the scum layer gets into 6-8 inches of the outlet pipe, then the system needs to be cleaned. Similarly, when the lower sludge layer gets into 12 inches of the outlet pipe, the system needs to be pumped out. However, inspecting your tank is not an easy job. If you are unable to inspect your tank, ask for a professional inspector. He will check for any leakage or clogging from the tank and then inspect the scum and sludge layers. For more instructions about inspection, read this article about septic tank inspection.

Here at UAE Septic Tank Cleaners, we have created a quick 10 step guide regarding septic tank cleaning:

Assessing the septic tank:

First of all the process begins with assessing the septic tank. The professional team will assess your tank and do the necessary inspections, whether the tank needs to be cleaned or not. They will check for any leakage from the tank and also check for any clogging. Then they will inspect the scum and sludge layers. If the scum layer is under 6-8 inches and the lower sludge layer is under 12 inches from the basic outlet pipe, the tank needs to be cleaned.

2. Disinfection:

After the inspection is done and the tank needs to be cleaned, the entire tank is disinfected. Particular chemicals like peracetic acid have been used to disinfect the tank. Adding 1 g L(-1) of peracetic acid to wastewater is a highly effective way of disinfection. It will destroy all the microorganisms and completely remove the slurry smell from wastewater.

3. Pumping:

Afterward, with the help of a sludge pump, all the sludge and scum have been pumped out. A large hose has been inserted into the tank from the manhole. All the waste is pumped out in a tanker truck. The stirring technique has been used to break the solid waste particles and mix them in liquid. So that the pumping process becomes easy. Now the whole tank is empty and ready for further steps of cleaning.

4. Dirt removal:

Using high precision equipment, all the sediments, dirt, stains, and fungus have been removed.

5.Tank cleaning with pressure:

In the next step, a high-pressure jet is used to clean off the whole tank. The walls, ceiling, and floor of the sewage tank have been washed out with pressure.

6. Vacuum cleaning:

Step 5 is followed by the vacuum cleaning technique. All the remaining dirt has been sucked out with the help of a vacuum.

7. Tank disinfection:

Afterward, an anti-bacterial spray or liquid bleach is used to completely disinfect the tank.

8. Ultraviolet rays:

Ultra Violet or UV radiations are applied on tank and the surroundings in order to get rid of any harmful bacteria.

9. Drying:

Finally, the tank is completely drained and left for drying. After some time drying your tank will be ready to use.

10. Tank is cleaned:

That’s it! Use your tank, it’s cleaned and ready to use. The cleaning has been done now but maintenance is a must for the efficient running of the tank. In order to keep running your tank efficiently, do the regular inspections and checkups of the tank. On average, an inspection after 2 years or so is a good deal. But if your tank has been installed with mechanical tools such as an alarm, electric switch, pump, etc. Your tank needs to be inspected every year. For maintenance of the tank, avoid using much water, avoid putting solid waste into the tank. Moreover, direct rainwater away from the drain field. Also, avoid putting chemicals down into the drains.

We have discussed all the steps included in a septic tank cleaning process. But it’s not an easy job for an ordinary person. A single mistake can put the health of you and your loved ones at risk. Also, any wrong step can lead to a huge loss. That’s why we highly recommend you to use professional services for your tank cleaning. Paying for professional services is better than the cost of replacing the whole tank. If are unable to find any professional services near you here in UAE, reach out to us. Contact UAE Septic Tank Cleaners and we will take care of your work. Hurry Up! Professionals are waiting for you.

How Do Septic Tanks Work? All you need to know about!

How Do Septic Tanks Work?

If you’re planning to install a septic tank at your home, there must be a question on your mind. How do septic tanks work? So in this article, you will get an answer to your question. Keep in touch till the end for exciting knowledge about the septic tanks.

How do septic tanks work?

What a septic tank is?

A septic tank is a chamber that is usually made up of concrete, plastic, or glass fiber. Generally, it is buried under the ground to treat the wastewater flowing out of the home. Most commonly it is used in areas where no sewerage system is available like rural areas or on-site areas.

How do septic tanks work?

Particularly, septic tanks consist of two compartments. The waste coming from the home enters into the first compartment through pipes. The solid waste settles down in the bottom and the remaining waste passes to the next compartment. Similarly, in the second compartment, the remaining solid particles settle down the bottom to make water waste-free. The water is now clean from waste particles. This clean water then enters into the drain field, from where it gets absorbed into the groundwater.

Components of septic tank:

Mainly, a septic tank consists of three components. A septic tank, a drain field, and soil. Below are the details of every component.

Septic tank:

A septic tank is used to treat the wastewater coming down from home. The solid wastes present in the water settle down in the tank and the treated water overflows into the drain field. The solid wastes that settled down in the tank are decomposed by microorganisms present in the tank. The decomposition results in sludge buildup. This sludge reduces the active volume of the tank and the tank needs to be cleaned.

Septic drain field or Leach field:

After the treatment in the septic tank, the water in clear condition travels to the septic drain field also known as the leach field. It consists of a piping network, often laid in a stone-filled trench. It distributes the wastewater throughout the field with multiple drainage holes in the network. The size of the drain field depends upon the volume of wastewater generated. The septic drain field is surrounded by suitable soil.

Soil:

The remaining impurities in water are eliminated in the soil. The excess amount of water is eliminated here in the soil. Some water absorbs into the ground, some water gets evaporated and some water is uptaken by plants roots. Also, some water gets entered into groundwater or surface-level water. A percolation test is required before the installation of the tank to ensure the porosity of the soil is adequate to serve as a drain field.

Cleaning a septic tank:

The solid waste that is not decomposed by the microorganisms must be removed by cleaning the septic tank. Otherwise, this sludge fills up the tank and becomes a reason for huge problems down the road. When the tank gets full, the wastewater with particles of the solid waste directly runs into the drain field. As a result of which clogging may occur in the drain field. Also, it will affect the porosity soil and as a result, it needs expensive repairs.

On average, the tank needs to be cleaned out every three to five years. However, a regular inspection will help in determining the time for cleaning. On average a septic tank needs inspection after every two to three years. But if your tank is outfitted with mechanical components, it needs an inspection every year. The cleaning of a septic tank depends on different factors related to the septic tank. Some of the factors include the size of a septic tank, size of the household, amount of water generated, etc. Also, it depends on the temperature inside the tank. Because it is responsible for the running of the micro organismic process in the tank. Cleaning the septic tank on regular basis will increase the life of the septic tank. Otherwise, if it gets late, it will prove itself so much expensive for you.

The cleaning of a septic tank consists of several steps. We have created an easy 10 steps guide for you.

  • First of all the process begins with assessing the septic tank.
  • Then the entire tank is disinfected with particular chemicals.
  • After that with the help of a sludge pump, all the sludge and scum has been pumped out.
  • Then using high precision equipment, all the sediments, dirt, stains, and fungus has been removed.
  • In the next step, a high-pressure jet is used to clean off the walls, ceiling, and floor of the sewage tank.
  • Step 5 is followed by a vacuum cleaning technique, used to suck out all the remaining dirt.
  • Afterward, an anti-bacterial spray or liquid bleach is used to completely disinfect the tank.
  • Ultra-Violet or UV radiations are on tank and the surroundings in order to get rid of any harmful bacteria.
  • Finally, the tank is completely drained and left for drying.
  • That’s it! Use your tank, it’s cleaned and ready to use.

Inspecting and cleaning a septic tank is not such an easy process. In other words, it is a difficult task for an ordinary person. However, with the help of professional services, it will become easy for you.

Maintenance of a septic tank:

A well-functioning septic system needs cleaning after a particular time. But, it still needs regular maintenance after cleaning. Maybe you will not observe any problem with your septic tank. But when the tank gets overfull then the septic system will stop working properly. Solid material like sludge might get into the septic tank and out through the absorption line. After that, it may cause damage to the septic system.

Is your septic system checked and cleaned on regular basis to ensure it’s working efficiently? Modern septic systems have a maintenance contract to perform regular checks and cleaning of the tank. But for older septic tanks or traditional systems, you’ll need to arrange the checks and septic cleaning yourself.

It’s possible for everyone to check the septic tank’s sludge levels. But it’s not an easy job. Many people arrange a professional plumber to do the checking and cleaning of the septic tank for them. It is recommended to annually check the levels of sludge in your septic tank.

What is a septic tank? – A Complete Guide

What is a septic tank?

Septic tank

Before we proceed to septic tank installation, lets quickly go through a short description of a septic tank. As you have come to this page, definitely you already know about a septic tank. However, it’s better to have the knowledge of a thing you are going to use. A septic tank is a chamber usually made up of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic. It’s an underground container used for the treatment of domestic wastewater (sewage). Septic tanks can be used in areas that are not connected to a sewerage system, such as rural areas. The wastewater runs down to the septic tank through the septic drain field, which provides further treatment. But a disadvantage commonly seen is groundwater pollution may occur and can be a problem.

The term “Septic” is defined as the anaerobic bacterial environment that develops in the tank. It is responsible for the breakdown or decomposition of the solid waste material in the tank. Septic tanks can also be installed with other wastewater treatment units. Such as biofilters or aerobic systems, commonly used for artificially forced aeration.

Septic tank installation:

You are much familiar with the thing named a septic tank. Now let us proceed to our main topic of the septic tank installation guide. Although, a septic tank installation is not an easy job for an ordinary person. You must have the necessary tools and plumbing skills and experience. Installing septic on your own is much cost-saving.

If a septic tank is installed incorrectly, it will be a great problem for you and your loved ones both legally and physically. That’s why it’s highly recommended to hire a professional for septic tank installation. By handing over your work to a professional one, you will be totally free of this tension of making problems.

However, if you have all the necessary equipment, good plumbing skills, and good experience, then our 10 step guide will help in your septic tank installation.

Remember, this guide is based on the general rules of septic tank installation. Don’t consider it as a legally approved guide. It is based on our past experience and our team’s knowledge of installing a septic tank.

Before going to install a septic tank, you must have passed a few conditions. In order to install a septic system at your house or field, you must know the law and legislation for installing a septic tank. For a complete guide to the law for installing a septic tank, checkout out our law article. Secondly, you need to perform a site survey where you want to install your septic system. Check your property isn’t in a restricted groundwater protection area. Determine the water table levels where you want to install a septic tank. Check if the ground is suitable for the drainage field area.

Last but not least most important thing is the design of your septic system. You must have created a complete design of your septic system. Whenever you are going to build anything, like a building or your house, you must have a plan. Without planning starting work is not a good option at all. Without a plan, a project is not a cost-saving, but you are at the risk of burning your cash. So, must design a complete plan of your septic system before getting started with septic tank installation

10 step guide

1. Arrange the necessary tools and equipment

Before going to install a septic tank, you must have arranged all the necessary tools needed for septic tank installation. Here we have created a list of all the necessary equipment needed for septic tank installation.

  • Backhoe or excavator
  • A Shovel
  • Hammer drill and bits
  • Hydraulic cement
  • Laser transit and grade pole
  • Saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Distribution box
  • PVC pipes and fittings
  • PVC primer and glue
  • A perforated pipe
  • Pipes and fittings
  • Vent caps and test caps
  • Septic fiber
  • Silicone caulk for sealing purpose
  • Septic filter
  • At last a septic tank

2. Select a suitable place

Select a suitable place where you want to install your septic tank system. Check the available space. Check the ability of soil to drain and filter wastewater.

3. Evacuate a large hole

Make sure it is large enough for the tank and any recommended backfill, then install the right type of base (often a concrete one) for the tank to sit on. Please ensure that you follow the manufactures detailed health and safety guidelines that will be provided in the manual when excavating your hole.

4. Inspect the tank for damage

Tanks will normally have been fully tested and checked before being dispatched to you, but it isn’t uncommon for them to become damaged during transportation and offloading. Make sure to thoroughly inspect the tank when it arrives as, once the tank is installed, most manufacturers won’t accept claims for damage.

5. Double-check the depths

You should have already checked the depth of your incoming pipework during the site survey and design stage of your project and ordered a tank with the appropriate invert levels. However, It is worth checking this again to ensure that the physical tank delivered will still connect to your existing pipework and remain within the maximum permissible depth.

6. Place the tank in a hole

Carefully lower the tank into the hole, using the recommended lifting system, while checking that the inlet and outlet orientation is correct and ensuring the tank is level.

7. Install the inlet and outlet

Should be a straightforward task if everything has gone to plan, but a qualified plumber should be consulted if you are unsure.

8. Install the septic drainage field

This ensures both that the pipes cannot be warped or damaged by heavy loads above, such as vehicles or buildings, as well as making sure that the water from the soakaway won’t enter a watercourse, which is in contravention of new guidelines from the Environment Agency.

9. Backfill and cover

Concrete, gravel, or sand are the most common recommendations, but check the instruction manual to see what the manufacturer advises and follow their steps for adding backfill to the site. Manufacturers will always assume the tank is going to be installed in a traffic-free area. If this is not the case, it is highly recommended that you contact a structural engineer before installing your system.

10. Ventillation arrangements

This can often be overlooked, but it is important to ensure your system is well vented to prevent odor issues on site. Contact our technical team for advice if you are unsure of the best arrangements for your site.

UAE Septic Tank Cleaners maintenance guide for septic and sewage tank:

A well-functioning septic system needs cleaning after a particular time. But, it still needs regular maintenance after cleaning. Maybe you will not observe any problem with your septic and sewage tank. But when the tank gets overfull then the septic system will stop working properly. Solid material like sludge might get into the septic and sewage tank and out through the absorption line. After that, it may cause damage to the septic system.

Keep in mind the 4 elements for a healthy life of your septic system:

Regular inspection

For a normal septic tank, you need a proper inspection of the septic system after every three years. The septic tank itself needs cleaning after a period of 3 to 5 years. But if you are using a septic tank that operates with mechanical components like electrical switches, pumps, etc. It should be inspected once every year.

While inspecting not only look at the sludge and scum layers but also inspect for tank leaks. Make sure the tank is getting a leak from anywhere. Otherwise, it will cause serious problems for the environment. However, it’s a difficult task for a normal person to perform an inspection. If you are unable to find a professional inspector yet, contact UAE Septic Tank Cleaners. We will provide you with the best inspector anywhere in UAE.

Water usage

The 2nd most important point to keep in mind is to use water efficiently. As much water, you will conserve it will increase the efficiency of a septic tank. On average a single person uses about 70 gallons of water per day. Furthermore, the leaks from taps and toilets also waste plenty of water per day. Where all this wasted water will go? Absolutely, it will travel through pipes and go into the septic tank. More water conservation will result in increased efficiency of the septic tanks.

Most commonly in households, much water is used in the kitchen, clothes washing, toilet and shower. If care is taken then a significant amount of water will be conserved. For instance, when you are using water in the kitchen avoid wasting water. Don’t leave the tap open for a long time. Use a water reducer in taps. Moreover, while washing clothes apply the same steps. Try to wash your laundry in smaller loads. For the shower in the bath, use a high-efficiency shower with a flow restrictor. Similarly, water-efficient toilets are also available, try purchasing them.

Waste disposal

Proper waste disposal is the 3rd most important point for the proper functioning of a septic tank. Keep in mind that everything that you dispose of in drains will affect the efficiency of the septic tank. We at UAE Septic Tank Cleaners recommend never dispose of the following elements in your drains or toilets:

  1. Diapers
  2. Any type of oil or grease
  3. Dental floss
  4. Tissue paper or Paper towels
  5. Baby wipes
  6. Cigarette butts
  7. Any kind of chemicals

We have added chemicals to the list because pouring toxin chemicals in drains or toilets will affect the septic tank performance. As you know there are small microorganisms in the septic tanks that are responsible for the breakdown of wastes. If we pour toxin chemicals into the septic system, it will kill those microorganisms. As a result of which septic system becomes unable to treat wastes.

Maintaining the drain-field area

The last but not the least important point to be kept in mind is to maintain the drain-field area of your septic system. Remember that the drain-field area is a much important part of the septic system. This drain-field area is responsible for the drainage of wastewater of the whole household. Normally it’s a stone-filled system to properly filter the water that goes down to the septic tank. There are numerous numbers of precautions that one can perform to maintain the drain-field area. Some of the steps are mentioned here:

  1. Never drive or park in your drain-field area.
  2. If you plant trees, plant them at a significant distance from the drain-field area.
  3. All rainwater drainage systems, sump pumps, and roof drains should be kept away from the drain field area.

Keep in mind these steps and your septic will keep working efficiently for years without needing to be replaced.

sewage tank and sump pit

Sewage tank and sump pit cleaning are two totally different tasks. A sewage tank is a huge tank used to treat the wastewater of a household. While a sump pit or sump pump is used to capture the exterior water of the house. Well, we have a complete article ahead to discuss in detail about sewage tank and sump pit or sump pump. Also, we will discuss ways sewage tank and sump pit cleaning.

Sewage tank:

A sewage tank is a chamber usually made up of concrete, fiberglass, or plastic. It’s an underground container used for the treatment of domestic wastewater (sewage). Sewage tanks can be used in areas that are not connected to a sewerage system, such as rural areas. The wastewater runs down to the sewage tank through a septic drain field, which provides further treatment. But a disadvantage commonly seen is groundwater pollution may occur and can be a problem.

The term “Septic” is defined as the anaerobic bacterial environment that develops in the tank. It is responsible for the breakdown or decomposition of the solid waste material in the tank. Sewage tanks can also be installed with other wastewater treatment units. Such as biofilters or aerobic systems, commonly used for artificially forced aeration.

In the settling process the solid waste settles down in the tank and liquid waste is passed to the other chamber. Similarly, anaerobic processes reduce solids and organic wastes. This process is known as primary treatment. The efficiency of primary treatment is only moderate.

The rate of accumulation of sludge is known as septage or fecal sludge. This process is faster than the rate of decomposition. Therefore, the sewage tank needs to be cleaned out manually and it’s done with the help of vacuum cleaning.

Sewage tank cleaning:

A septic or sewage tank cleaning has been done in several steps. For your guideline, we have arranged a quick overview of these steps below.

  • First of all the process begins with assessing the sewage tank.

Inspecting and cleaning a sewage tank is not such an easy process.  In other words, it is a difficult task for an ordinary person. However, with the help of professional services, it will become easy for you.

Sump Pit and Sump Pump

In the residential construction fields, sump pit and sump pump manage exterior water runoff. Not all homes have a sump pump system installed at the time of construction. The determining factor is typically the potential for the water runoff to be deposited next to the foundations of the home. Homes with these systems are usually at the basement construction. But the sumo pumps can be installed on a cross basis as well. When the builder determines that the water collection is likely, the drain system will be installed around the home near the foundation fitting. The drain pipe is designed to capture water that is advancing towards the foundation wall. Generally, a drain pipe is a 4-inch plastic pipe with holes on top. When the water reaches the drainpipe, the water travels towards the sump pump located below the basement. The electric pump in the system is activated with the flow of water. When the water reaches the predetermined position, it is pumped out via a drain pipe and taken away from the home. This type of water is generally not allowed in municipal waste systems.

Generally, sump pumps are of two types. Some are categorized as submersible and some are pedestal. Sump pumps should be plugged into a dedicated circuit. Always keep your sump pits free from debris to avoid clogging. Inspect your pump at least twice a year. Keep your sump pumps covered. Also, make sure it is sealed if an active radon system is installed.

Sump pit cleaning

For your ease, we have created a few simple steps to clean your sump pit system. Let us uncover these points below:

Gather the necessary equipment needed

Manage to gather the necessary equipment before getting started. For example, a scraping tool, a large bucket to collect waste.

Make sure the water supply is disconnected

Before starting the project make sure to turn off all the water resources leading down to the sump pump. Also, avoid cleaning on a rainy day or in damped conditions.

Disconnect and remove the sump pump

Unplug the sump pump and turn off the breaker that is providing supply to the sump pump.

Clean the sump pump and sump pit

Disconnect the pump from discharging pipe and lift it up from the pit. Put it into a bucket or a strong plastic wrap to avoid dropping down of garbage. Rinse the pump with pressure water like with your gardening hose. Then scrap the sludge and crud with the help of a scraping tool. After scraping, clean the pump again with water.

Use a wet vac to remove any remaining water from the sump pit. Remove any solid waste present in the pit. Then scrap the sludge and crud with the help of a scraping tool.

Check for any possible damage

Check both the sump pump and sump pit for any damage. Fix the damage if there’s any or replace the pump or pit new one.

Reconnect the pump

After completing all steps and cleaning the sump system, reinstall the pump into the pit. Connect the water discharging pipe and reconnect the power. That’s great! Your system is running again.

Septic Tank Inspection – Complete Guide

Septic tank inspection

septic tank insppection

Septic tank inspection is an essential job for the owners of the house using a septic system. One must keep in mind the regular inspection of a septic tank so that the system keeps running efficiently. Usually, the septic tank is buried under the ground that’s why people forget about it until problems arise.

Defining a septic tank

The areas that are not connected to sewerage or don’t have public sewerage facility, depend upon a septic tank system. A septic tank is a huge container buried under the ground for the purpose of treating wastewater and effluents. Generally, a septic tank is made up of concrete, plastic, or glass fiber. Most commonly a concrete septic tank is used.

Septic tank consists of two compartments for treating wastewater and solid wastes. The solid wastes coming alongside water get deposited into the bottom of the septic tank. Once all the solids get settled in the tank, the liquid water is sent into the drain field. The soil beneath the drain field contains bacteria that further treat the water. Afterward, the cleaned water gets absorbed into the ground and adds to groundwater. The anaerobic process occurring in the septic tank results in the partial breakdown of solid wastes. This breakdown causes the sludge build-up in the tank. The increasing sludge levels will reduce the volume of the septic tank and then the tank needs to be cleaned.

A well-installed and well-managed septic system lasts long for years without creating problems. On the other hand, if a septic system is not cared about and not inspected for years, it will make huge problems down the road.

Inspection of a septic tank

On average, a septic tank needs to be cleaned after every 3-5 years. However, a tank must be regularly inspected. The average time for septic tank inspection is every 2 or 3 years. But, if your system is outfitted with mechanical components, it must be inspected every year. Septic tank inspection involves the inspection of water levels, sludge, and scum layers level in the tank.
