Our drainage cleaning ideas

Plunging

The first tool that should be considered while drainage unblocking is a plunger. The plunger works on the principle of suction and compression. It generates the forces with up and down motions. When you pull it up, it pulls the water in the drain upward. As a result, the clog starts loosening. Similarly, when you push the plunger down, it forces the water down along with the clog. After a few sets of up and down motions, the clog gets loosen and broken at last due to pull and push effects. Now the water will carry this clog and throws it out from your pipe.

Place the plunger on the opening of the pipe and completely cover the opening with the cup of the plunger. Use quick and sharp up and down motions to loosen the clog. Constantly keep applying push and pull forces without breaking the seal. After a pair of six to seven push and pulls, check your progress. If the water starts flowing, you are successful. If there is no flowing of water through a pipe, do the job again. When the clog gets removed, you will feel it yourself. Because the plunger gets easily up and down. Once the clog is clear, run hot water into the pipe to make sure all the leftover debris is washed away.

Clean the trap

If the plunger didn’t perform on your expectations, check out if there is any ‘U’ shaped trap in your pipe. Sometimes particles of solid wastes get stuck into this ‘U’ shaped trap. With the passage of time, these waste particles start building sludge in the pipe. This sludge results in the building up of clog and at last blockage of drain. However, if the clog is small, the plunger will remove it in a few strokes. But if the clog is dense, the plunger may be unable to get rid of it.

Now the best solution is to open this U-shaped pipe and remove the clog. You can use a wire brush or any old toothbrush to remove the clog. Large clogs can easily be removed. Further, clean the trap to remove any debris or dirt. Clean the surroundings and joint areas of pipe and rinse with hot water. Reassemble the pipe and tighten the nuts carefully. You have done the job!

Plumber’s snake

If neither plunging nor cleaning the trap clears a drain clog, your final weapon is a drain auger. This drain auger is also known as a plumber’s snake. It is a coiled spiral snake that is usually about 1/4-inch thick with a handle on one end. It works in the opposite way to the plunger. You have to push the snake into the blocked drain. Now steadily crank the handle to drive the snake farther into the pipe. You will observe strong obstruction when the snake reaches the clog. The snake will break the clogs into pieces that will flush with water. Or the snake will catch the clog. Now gently pull out the snake from the drain and remove the clog from the head of the auger (snake). Some snakes can be fitted as an attachment on an electric drill, giving it more power to force it through the blocked drain. Snakes are long enough to reach clogs that are deep within a drainpipe.

Our homemade drain cleaners

Baking soda and vinegar

Clear the area around the blocked drain and put a half cup of baking soda into the drain. After that, put a half cup of vinegar. Plug the drain and leave it for 1 to 1.5 hours. Then unplug the drain and pour the boiling water into the drain. Keep pouring hot water until the drain gets cleared. It’s quick and best to remove the blockage from drains.

Dish soap and hot water

Another way to remove clogs caused by grease or oils is to use dish soap along with hot water. Boil about 2-3 liters of water and add dish soap to it. Steadily start pouring the hot water into the drain. This method may take a few tries but it will remove the clog because of its hot nature.

Salt, borax, and vinegar

Put a 1/4 cup of salt, 1/4 cup of Borax, and a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Add a pot of boiling water and leave it for at least an hour or until it clears. Finally, pour hot water into the drain to remove all the dirt and debris.

Baking soda and salt

Before going to bed at night, put a mixture of 1/2 cup of each salt and baking soda into the drain along with a pot of hot water. Leave it overnight. In the morning when it gets cleared, pour boiling water into the drain.

Wire hangers

Most commonly a clog is caused by hair buildup in the drainage pipe. A quick way to remove such kind of clogs is using a wire hanger or something similar to that. Straighten the hanger out but leave the hook. Use the hook end of the hanger to fish in the drain and pull up any food or hair buildup that is clogging the passageway in the pipe. After removing as much as you possibly can, run hot water down the pipe.
